The morning after my post about the Israeli prankster and the determination of some staunchly conservative Israelis, Benjamin Netanyahu announced his resignation in protest over the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza next week. This supports the assertion that there are forces on both sides that would prefer to continue in an engaged struggle rather than compromise in hopes of lasting peace. Signs were pointing to a promising future with Abbas leading the Palestinian fight after the death of Yasser Arafat, but such a high-ranking internal protest on the Israeli front is disconcerting to say the least. Moreover, it’s obvious that Netanyahu has support for continued occupation from some Israelis. I was astonished to see that Ariel Sharon referred to the murderous AWOL Israeli soldier as a terrorist. The irony with his admission is that the Israeli use of “targeted assassinations” also constitutes another form of terrorism: state sponsored.
