Pronunciation Of Iraq

by Raj on April 3, 2006

Sometimes small things just bug the shit of out me. One of those things that drives me mad is the pronunciation of Iraq by my fellow Americans. If we’re going to invade a country the least we can do is pronounce it properly.
Wrong pronunciation: “I rack”

Wrong pronunciation: “I rock”

Correct pronunciation: “E rock” (rhymes with “we rock”)

Bonus points: “E r-r-r-ock” (roll the ‘r’ and you score higher)

I SO totally agree. I have corrected people a number of times, and they just look at me like I have a hole in my head.

At least you would think that our newspeople could get it right, but no. They repeatedly mispronounce it.

And of course the Pres. can hardly pronounce anything in English, let alone a correct pronunciation of a foreign country.

I totally agree with you as well! I get really mad when people say ‘Eye-Rack’, when its supposed to be ‘E-Raac’. For E Rock, I actually say E-Rawck, but Americans tend to pronounce the ‘O’ as an aah, so American would say E Rock the correct way of saying Iraq.

DJ E Rock’s friends says it just like DJ Iraq!:

One more thing I need to add, I get really mad when I watch the misleading video, the iRack video created by Apple and Steve Jobbs. I guess Steve Jobbs needs to learn how to pronounce as well!

Sorry to both of you… But the correct pronunciation is actually Ih-Rahk… Remember that its an arabic take on a french word

I think we're saying it the same, but spelling it different phonetically.
