LoudSpeakers At InternmentCamp #015

I am late in creating my “intro to GBV” podcast for a variety of reasons, mostly because it requires more time than I originally planned. This weekend should clear that up. Instead, I decided to put out a mid-week podcast full of the best current top 40. Not really, but I did use Tom Zé to carry me through the podcast.

Here’s a tracklist:

Arab Strap - Don’t Ask Me To Dance
The Aislers Set - Emotional Levy
John Vanderslice - Plymouth Rock
The Concretes - Sunbeams
Aloha - Big Morning
Raising The Fawn - Carbon Paper
Larrikin Love - Little Boy Lost
Cee-Lo - Soul Machine
Archie Bronson Outfit - Got To Get (Your Eyes)
Camera Obscura - The Sun On His Back
Architecture In Helsinki - City Calm Down
Tom Zé - Defect 1: Gene [Gene To Gene Mix]

70’s music and the influence on today’s younger bands was on the mind this weekend. Well created pastiche can be a wonderful thing when executed without kitschy and liberal imitation. Some of the bands in the podcast poured the foundation for the music being created in the current period. Revisiting (and sometimes discovering) these bands and their individual histories is indeed part of the overall pleasure of music.

Träd, Gräs och Stenar helped stitch the songs together using their release from 1971 entitled “Djungelns Lag

Here’s a tracklist:

Gang Of Four - At Home He’s A Tourist (1979)
Wire - 12 XU (1977)
The Who - Baba O’Riley (1971)
Stevie Wonder - He’s Misstra Know It All (1973)
Television - Marquee Moon (1977)
Joy Division - Wilderness (1979)
Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue (1975)

LoudSpeakers At InternmentCamp #012 - “5 Years Of The Triangle”

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

I lived in Raleigh, NC twice between 1990 and 1995 and was heavily influenced by the music from the area known as “The Triangle,” which consists of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

The sound at the time was mixed between bands that played jangly guitar pop and those that were more punk inspired. A handful of bands stood out from my listening perspective including The Connells, Dillon Fence, Superchunk, and Ben Folds. I picked some of my favorite tracks from those years in North Carolina.

Here’s a tracklist:

Dillon Fence - Queen Of The In-Between
Dillon Fence - Collapsis
Dillon Fence - Frances
Superchunk - Slack Motherfucker
Superchunk - Driveway To Driveway
Queen Sarah Saturday - Bee
Veldt - CCCP
The Connells - New Boy (Live)
The Connells - Too Gone
The Connells - Running Mary (Live Acoustic)
Ben Folds - Philosophy
Ben Folds - Alice Childress
Ben Folds - Best Imitation Of Myself
Ben Folds - The Last Polka
Sibylle Baier - Tonight

Here’s the tracklist from today’s podcast. Most of it consists of songs from records that I have been listening to lately. I took a little longer putting this one together than the last, but such is the nature of sequencing and choosing the right tracks.

Calexico - Not Even Stevie Nicks…
My Morning Jacket - Wordless Chorus
Belle And Sebastian - The Fox In The Snow (Live)
Beth Orton - Conceived

One of the great things about podcasting is that the concentration required to sequence and choose a handful of tracks can allow you to forget about having had a somewhat shitty day. I had great fun putting this one together.

Belle & Sebastian - For The Price Of A Cup Of Tea
The Happy Bullets - The Vice And Virtue Ministry
The Gossip - Fire With Fire

My older sister briefly started this one off with me then had tend to her kids, aka “The Circus,” since they were in town visiting for the long holiday weekend.

Great Lake Swimmers - Let’s Trade Skin
Ruth - Roman Photo
Tender Forever - Tender Forever

Saturday, November 19th, 2005

I listened to no less than 12 complete records between Friday and Saturday evening in order to play catch-up, but to also prepare for this weekend’s podcast. I did this in between watching the new Guided by Voices DVD entitled “The Electrifying Conclusion” which was full of very sad moments considering it was of their last show on Dec. 31, 2004 in Chicago.

Sigur Rós helped connect the songs this time around. I forgot how much I really enjoyed Takk. There’s a nice Icelandic pronunciation guide on their site in case your interested in sharpening your skills.

Here’s a list of songs:

Sharon Jones - How Long Do I Have To Wait For You?
Sigur Rós - Saeglopur
Ester Drang - Come Back Alive
Robert Pollard And Doug Gillard - And I Don’t (So Now I Do)
The Stills - Lola Stars And Stripes
Heartless Bastards - Onions
The Mendoza Line - Mysterious In Black
Boys Of Scandinavia - Hallucination
Test Icicles - Circle Square Triangle

This was a rather diverse podcast — just kinda played stuff that I have been thinking about recently as I prepared to travel Monday morning to San Francisco for a couple of days.

Got back to Atlanta on Sunday evening from South Carolina where I spent the weekend visiting some friends. We spent a night in Charleston, SC where we were out Friday night (Sat. morning) until 4AM. I just can’t do it like I use to. My body’s just not built anymore (like it was ever) to hang out with the kids who just turned 21.

Here’s a list of songs:

Clearlake - No Kind Of Life
Doug Gillard - Going Back (To You)
New Year - Chinese Handcuffs
Bedhead - Bedside Table
Morrissey - Irish Blood, English Heart
Sun Kil Moon - Carry Me Ohio
LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk Is Playing at My House
Jonathan Richman - I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar
Iron & Wine - Naked As We Came
Chris Bell - I Am The Cosmos
Saturday Looks Good To Me - You Work All Weekend
Goodie Mob - Hold On
Dizzee Rascal - Learn

Podcasting is a great way to fight insomnia — not really, but I was feeling quite motivated regardless late last night. I mistakenly refer to being able to download the new Cat Power MP3 from matador.com rather than matadorrecords.com.

Cat Power - The Greatest
The Cardigans - Godspell
Controller.Controller - Poison/Safe
Jens Lekman - At The Dept. Of Forgotten Songs
Jens Lekman - Maple Leaves (7″ version)
Suburban Kids With Biblical Names - Marry Me
Silver Jews - Punks In The Beerlight
South San Gabriel - Predatory King Today
Art Brut - My Little Brother
Antony & The Johnsons - Fistful Of Love
Belle And Sebastian - The Loneliness Of The Middle Distance Runner
Iron And Wine - Woman King
The Raveonettes - Ode To L.A.

I was trying to come up with a name for my podcast which I eventually decided to move ahead with. I thought about the elements that might exist in an actual internment camp that would lend itself to podcasting. Podcasting, by it’s very nature, is not very dynamic and lacks the same fluidity that analog broadasting outlets have enjoyed for years. In other words, you can’t influence or change the direction of the podcast midway after it’s created. Much like the loud speakers in an internment camp, the internees have little control of what’s being broadcasted. Why the name internmentcamp.com for the domain name? That’s a different post altogether.
